Breaking In Your Jutis
Genuine vegetable-tanned leather is naturally firm when new. Some stiffness during the first few wears is completely normal — it is a sign of authentic, untreated leather, not a defect.
- First 1–3 wears: Wear for short durations (1–2 hours) to allow the leather to begin moulding to your foot.
- Gradual softening: With continued use, the leather flexes and softens along your natural pressure points, improving fit and comfort over 5–7 wears.
- Tip: Wearing a pair of thin cotton socks during the first couple of outings can ease the break-in process and reduce friction.
Leather Care Instructions
Proper care keeps your Kolhapuri jutis looking and feeling their best for years.
- Keep leather dry: Avoid prolonged exposure to water or rain. If the jutis get wet, do not place them near direct heat or sunlight to dry — this can cause cracking.
- Drying: Stuff with dry newspaper or a cloth and allow to air-dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
- Conditioning: Once dry, apply a small amount of leather conditioner or colourless shoe cream to restore suppleness. Buff gently with a soft cloth.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a dust bag or the original box to prevent dust build-up.
- When care is no longer appropriate: If the leather develops deep cracks, the sole separates, or the hand-braiding frays extensively, the product has reached the end of its wearable life and conditioning will not restore structural integrity.
